Form 1098-C is the IRS statement a charity sends you after you donate a car, truck, boat, or other vehicle, and it is the document that tells both you and the IRS exactly how much you are allowed to deduct. If your donated vehicle is worth more than $500, you cannot claim the deduction without it.
That one sentence answers what most people are really asking. But there is more worth understanding before you sign a title over, and at Kingdom Dominion Reigns we want every donor to give with clear eyes and a settled heart.
What Is Form 1098-C for a Car Donation?
Officially titled Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes, Form 1098-C is a short IRS form the receiving charity fills out and sends to the donor. It records who gave, what was given (including the vehicle identification number), the date of the gift, and, most importantly, what the charity did with the vehicle after it left your driveway.
The form exists because vehicle values are easy to overstate. Rather than take a donor's word for what a car was worth, the IRS asks the charity to report the actual outcome. Your deduction follows that outcome.
When Does a Charity Send You Form 1098-C?
A qualified 501(c)(3) charity must provide Form 1098-C within 30 days of one of two events: the date the vehicle is sold, or the date the charity decides to keep and use it. Most vehicle donations fall into the first category, so the clock usually starts the day the car sells.
If your vehicle is valued at $500 or less, you generally will not receive a 1098-C at all. A simple written acknowledgment from the charity is enough, and you deduct the lesser of fair market value or $500.
The Boxes That Decide Your Deduction
Three parts of the form do the real work.
Box 4c, gross proceeds from the sale. When a charity sells the donated vehicle, this number is normally the ceiling on your deduction. If the car sold for $2,400, that is what you claim, no matter what a valuation guide said it was worth.
Box 5a, significant intervening use. If the charity materially uses the vehicle before selling it, you may instead be able to deduct fair market value.
Box 5b, material improvement. Same idea. If the charity makes substantial repairs before the sale, fair market value can apply.
Keep the copy you receive. If your deduction is more than $500, you file Copy B with your return, and deductions above $5,000 generally require a qualified written appraisal as well.
What Kingdom Dominion Reigns Does With Your Donated Vehicle
Kingdom Dominion Reigns is a registered 501(c)(3) Christian nonprofit, and your vehicle donation is 100% tax-deductible. We accept every kind of vehicle, including cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, RVs, and campers, running or not.
Here is what happens next, and it is the part we care about most: we resell the donated vehicle and use the proceeds to buy a reliable car for a family in need. A boat that has not left the dock in six years becomes a dependable sedan for a mother starting a new job. An RV parked behind a garage becomes safe transportation for a family rebuilding after a hard season.
That is restoration you can measure. One vehicle turned into one fresh start. Scripture puts it plainly: "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD" (Proverbs 19:17).
How to Donate a Vehicle to Kingdom Dominion Reigns
Email us at KingdomDominionReigns@gmail.com with the year, make, model, and condition of your vehicle. We will walk you through the title transfer, arrange the pickup, and send your Form 1098-C or written acknowledgment once the vehicle sells. If a vehicle is not what you have to give, a gift of any size does the same work. Every dollar goes into housing restoration and transportation for families in crisis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Form 1098-C to deduct a car donation? Yes, if the vehicle is worth more than $500. Without it, the IRS will not allow the deduction. For vehicles valued at $500 or less, a written acknowledgment from the charity is sufficient.
What if I never receive Form 1098-C? Contact the charity directly. They are required to furnish it within 30 days of selling the vehicle or placing it into use. A legitimate 501(c)(3) will send it without being chased.
Can I deduct the Kelley Blue Book value of my car? Usually not. If the charity sells the vehicle, your deduction is normally limited to the gross sale proceeds reported in Box 4c, which is often less than a valuation guide suggests.
